USS Odax and Walt Disney, want a find!

USS Odax and Walt Disney, want a find!

You never know what will walk into the Buy Room ™ at Premier Arms. And as the largest buyer of firearms, military items, jewelry, gold and silver coins and bullion in the Midwest, we have had some pretty incredible, scarce and collectable items walk in, but this item has to be a true top-5 item.

Many may be surprised to learn that during WWII DIsney artists drew up around 1200 various logos for the US Military, many for the Navy. The USS Odax SS-484, who served from July 1945 to July 1972, was such a recipient. Pictured here is the original hand-drawn and colored logo for the USS Odax that features an odax fish swimming through the water with a Japanese merchant ship in its mouth. Also included in this collection we bought was the original letter from Walt DIsney stating that they received the Navy’s request for a logo but were busy and will try to get the logo designed and the second letter stating that they hope the Navy is happy with the enclosed logo. There is even the original envelope, addressed to the USS Odax at the Naval Shipyard, that the logo was mailed in as well as the original legal release granting the US Navy full rights to use this logo. Also included is a color copy of this logo, presumably used to show the Navy painters the color scheme the Disney artists desired. An original blueprint of the USS Odax was also included from the serviceman that served on the Odax and was the owner of this artwork.

It is safe to say that this may be one of the most complete and intact historical Disney logos, and we are honored to be entrusted with its care and preservation.
